Box of Pain Box of Fear Bill Garten 9781477273531 Books Reviews

Bill Garten's imagery is truly amazing. His mixture of stream of consciousness and his vivid metaphors makes him one of the best living poets of this century. Once again he captures the world with his words, like a photographer captures the world with his camera. His confessional style reminds me so much of other poets like Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Randall Jarrell, and Weldon Kees. As an avid reader of Bill Garten's books, I see now he has moved into sonnets and form where in his earlier works he relied more on free verse. He is not afraid to portray in his poetry the desperation of life and the naked self. The persona in these poems is afraid and dysfunctional, yet functioning, which leads the reader to see behind the curtain of what is really going on. Sometimes there are clues and other times just outright bold testimony about the angst surrounding the poet and his art. The whole book reminds me of a man in a confessional, confessing to a Priest, but in this case Bill Garten is using his poems as his confession and you, the reader, as his Priest. Unlike his previous work, Bill Garten has begun thinking about his poem's titles. In earlier works we were exposed to "Frames", which Bill fully explained once at a poetry reading. He originally said he was taking pictures with his mind, so he titled his poems "Frames" coupled with numbers and there was some sort of chronological system going on. But then that system fell apart. He said the "Frames" were no longer pictures, but more of a video in his head, so he strayed away from this method of archiving his work. As troubled as these poems are and as troubled as the persona in these poems is, there remains regardless, incredible, precise poetry here in Bill's fifth book. If you are a fan, it is a must read. If you are not, it is still imperative that you read Bill Garten's "Box Of Pain, Box Of Fear".

As a side note, my only hope is there is more poetry from Bill Garten and that his prayer to us as an audience is answered and he does not meet the fate of so many other poets like him. As we dance between the partners of tragedy and comedy, I hope Bill ends up still dancing and still writing as he hears the music from the muses. I believe perhaps this is the only way he will survive, as he still dances along the edges of the terra firma.
This is one of the best books of poetry I have ever read! Full of rich images and vivid metaphors.
