How to Get Rid of Depression Basic Tips to Help Cure Your Depression edition by DN Advice Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

How should I rate this book? I have 33 years of adult endogenous depression behind me. I know all of these steps and they are effective to different degrees. And the author has omitted some information that I feel a first time depression suffer should know (perhaps because this was meant to be basic tips?). Lastly the author sums up with a statement that is just not true for most depression suffers.

I have been in clubs when depressed and it is possibly the most miserable experience for me. Most people in clubs are non-depressive and once they figure out you are somehow different, they exclude you from conversations during clubs breaks making you feel more isolated. The average non-depressive does shallow sympathy but not empathy or compassion. The average non-depressive tells you to snap out of it, a very insulting and invalidating thing to say. So skip joining a club.

If your job is truly part of the problem (you boss is harrassing you or you job is making you cry every day) and you have financial resources to fall back on, quit your job or take a medical leave of absence. Find something else to do during the day. Taking classes is good. If you stay with your daytime job, take night classes or weekend classes. Conversation will be restricted to the subject of the class. You don't run the risks of social isolation you may find in a club. Another good daytime option is volunteer work. This will most likely make you feel better about yourself. It worked for me more than once.

Find a therapist who is right for you and who uses a therapy that helps you and one you can afford. Studies have shown that working with a therapist while taking anti-depressants is more effective than either one alone. Also if the first therapist you go to gives you the creeps, get another referral to someone else. If your depression also involves anxiety, mention it. You may need anti-anxiety medications too. The anti-anxiety medications may need a doctor's authorization for every refill so call for refills at least one week in advance. Anti-anxiety meds work immediately but anti-depressants take at least six weeks to become effective (I know, major bummer). I have my primary care physician work with my psychologist.

Suicidal thoughts occur most often at night. Get someone to stay with you throughout the nights until you are feeling somewhat better. Even if the person is sleeping in the same room (not awake with you) you still feel less alone. And it is a reminder that there are people who care about you.

Lastly, if you survive your first depression, please don't be even more devastated when the second depression episodes slams you years later. By the third, you'll be thinking, oh no, not again. By the fourth, you may find you are getting better at finding the light at the end of the tunnel or at climbing out of the pit. By the fifth, you may see it coming ahead of time and can begin the steps to make this depression not as deep as the others were. For me and many others, we are never 100% cured of depression but we are surviving and are learning to fully enjoy those occasions when we are happy.

There is still a stigma to depression. Don't let people mark you with the stigma. Those people have no idea what you have survived.

Rating: semi helpful but not for severe depression sufferers 3.5 stars.
